He claimed that the training they had at the time was insufficient to deal with criminal groups in a practical manner.
He said despite carrying weapons, immigration and customs officers lack the training to effectively combat criminal activities along the borders. He said integrating state police forces with the responsibility of border control could enhance security, especially in riverine and boundary areas.
He proposed that state police could function as coast guards in riverine regions like Niger Delta and serve as national border forces in boundary areas.
In Jonathan’s words:
“I was in Customs for 2years before I entered University and our training was not enough for you to confront criminal gangs. So this issue must be integrated with the issue of State Police.
