Great Wall King Kong Cannon Is Ready For The Chinese Car Market

The new Great Wall King Kong Canon will be launched on the Chinese car market soon. Time to have a good look at this new four-door five-seat pickup truck. Great Wall says the King Kong Canon is aimed at “young entrepreneurs”. It therefore has a comparatively progressive design, with wide wheel arches and a huge shiny grille.

The naming of the Cannon is a bit confusing, as is often the case with Great Wall vehicles. The company name is Great Wall Motors (GWM). The brand is Great Wall. The type name is Cannon (炮, pao). They started with a single car, called the Great Wall Canon (长城炮). So far so easy.

But GWM has since turned Cannon into a series of cars. So now you got the naming like this: GWM Great Wall Cannon XXX (长城金刚炮XXX). However, for the King Kong, Great Wall has turned that around, and called this one the Great Wall King Kong Canon (长城金刚炮).

The Cannon series has its own distinctive logo, depicting the muzzle of a cannon. Sadly, the confusion doesn’t end there. Great Wall uses two different English names: Cannon and Poer. The latter is a phonetic translation of the Chinese name 炮 (pao).

The interior is nice enough for the segment, with a digital instrument panel and a modestly sized central touch screen for the infotainment. Design of the air vents is kind of hip.

Enough space for three adults in the back. The King Kong Cannon is a large car: 5635/1880/1815, with a 3410 wheelbase. Size of the cargo box is 1820/1500/495. Max load capacity if 500 kilo, in line with other pickup trucks in the segment.

The King Kong Cannon will be available with two engines: a 2.0 turbo with 197 hp and a 2.0 turbo diesel with 165 hp. Gearbox is a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic. Power goes to the rear wheels only.

The Great Wall King Kong Canon is positioned between the real ultra cheap and super basic workhorse pickup trucks and the more luxurious passenger-car style pickup truck. That segment is fast becoming very popular in China so it is a good place to be for Great Wall. Price is great too: the King King Canon will cost between 100.000 and 130.000 yuan ($15.730 – 20.450), which seems a good deal for so much car.
