ISWAP Attack in Borno: 8 Killed in Fresh Violence
No fewer than four members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and four labourers working for Borno State Ministry of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (RRR) have been killed in a fresh deadly attack by Boko Haram/ ISWAP terrorists in Mayenti community in Bama local government area of the State.
LEADERSHIP reports that the attack occurred on Monday, hours after the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, visited Maiduguri on his first operational tour to the theatre of the counter-insurgency operations in the northeast.
Two soldiers and two members of the CJTF were also killed on Friday when the terrorists ambushed troops of Operation Hadin Kai Joint Taskforce on a routine operation in Wajiroko in Azir Multe in the Damboa local government of Borno state.
Mayenti, where the attack occurred, is located a few kilometres from Darajamal in the same Bama where the terrorists, months ago, killed over 60 persons, including five soldiers and burnt several houses.
Credible intelligence sources said the terrorists stormed the community with motorcycles and gun trucks in an attempt to overrun the military base there.
The sources said that although troops successfully repelled the attackers, the confrontation resulted in the deaths of four members of the volunteer security force who were defending the town.
Also, four soldiers reportedly went missing during the attack, and their whereabouts remained unknown.
The terrorists, while retreating with the bodies of their fighters according to the source, set ablaze two trucks belonging to the Borno State Ministry of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement, and killed the four labourers working in the area.
The Monday attack occurred shortly after ISWAP released footage confirming the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba, who was captured over the weekend after breaking a terrorist ambush during the Wajiroko attack, but later lost contact with his troops.
According to reports, the late General established communication with the military high command and rescue teams, but the rescue efforts were unsuccessful.
