Eko Hot Blog reports that the Federal Government has emphasized its commitment to achieving self-sufficiency in food production, asserting that Nigeria can feed itself and potentially become a net exporter of food items.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this declaration during a press briefing at Aso Villa, Abuja.
Minister Idris highlighted the government’s decision to discourage food importation, stating, “Nigeria has the potential to feed itself and even be a net exporter of food items to other countries.”
He emphasized the collaborative efforts of governors in investing in the agricultural sector to ensure increased food availability for Nigerians.
The declaration follows a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the 36 state governors, where Tinubu announced the government’s determination to address the food crisis without resorting to a price control board or approving food importation.
President Tinubu stated, “I will not set up a price control board. I will not also approve the importation of food.” Instead, he outlined plans to support farmers through schemes to boost food production.
The meeting, attended by key officials, including the Vice President, National Security Adviser, Inspector-General of Police, and ministers, aimed to address concerns about the high cost of living and food commodities, sparking protests in several states.
Tinubu assured Nigerians that the government is focused on implementing livestock development and management plans, including dairy farming, to enhance food production and mitigate the impact of the rising cost of living.
