Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has thwarted an early morning attempt by alleged policemen to take over the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and steal sensitive electoral materials.
The attempted takeover, allegedly ordered by the Inspector-General of Police, was foiled when vigilant security officials alerted the Governor. He swiftly responded with a team of government officials, lawmakers, and stakeholders.
Governor Fubara condemned the policemen’s actions, stating that the IGP’s friendship with Abuja-based politicians has gone too far. “Local government elections are internal state affairs and should be conducted without interference,” he emphasized.
The incident comes on the eve of the local government polls, scheduled for Saturday, October 5.
