Vanguard reports that in a recent candid interview, Chief Olabode Ibiyinka George, a well-known figure in Nigerian politics, the former Military Administrator of the former Ondo State and the former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), offered his candid insights on a range of topics related to the political career. The topic of discussion included the general elections of 2023, the contentious ruling by the Supreme Court upholding President Bola Tinubu’s victory, the PDP’s lessons learned, the necessity of reviewing the 2014 National Conference report, and George’s will to continue participating in politics.
According to him, “I listened and heard the judgment, I became very sad. As the apex body, I was very disappointed about that judgment. If he won justifiably and seamlessly, why not? No problem. There are two major areas of concern for me. One, Okoro redefined the status of Abuja. How? You must have the majority of votes and you must win in two-thirds of the states of the federation and Abuja. Abuja is not among the states because Abuja is not a state. I believe the Supreme Court has given a ruling in the past. So, why is Justice Okoro driving us back into the jungle? The whole world is growing.”
Expressing his disappointment, Chief George addressed the Supreme Court’s verdict on the 2023 elections. He questioned the judgment, particularly Justice Okoro’s interpretation of Abuja’s status in electoral matters. George argued that Abuja, akin to Washington DC in the United States, should not be considered a state. He pondered the implications of this ruling on the evolving nature of global governance and expressed concerns about the historical legacy of the justices involved.
