Kaduna Governorship Election Under Scrutiny by Labour Party

Jonathan Asake, the gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party in Kaduna State, has asked the Election Petition Tribunal to nullify the state governorship election held on 18 March 2023, alleging non-compliance with electoral law. Independent National Electoral Commission declared Uba Sani of the ruling All Progressives Congress victorious in the election.

In a petition, Asake and his legal team raised concerns of “massive vote buying” and irregularities, demanding that the court invalidate the election process altogether. “Our complaint before the court is of non-compliance with the electoral act and massive vote buying. In our petition, we asked the court to invalidate the entire process,” said Abah Ejembi, the lead counsel for the Labour Party.

During the pre-hearing, the court discussed the processes and procedures that will guide the case and the applications that will be filed. The case is expected to be heard on 15 June 2023 by the three-judge panel comprising Chairman Justice Victor O. Oviawe, Justice D.A Damulak and Justice N. Nonye.
