Kogi Electoral Commission Sets Date for 2026 Local Government Elections

The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) has announced October 17, 2026, as the date for the conduct of local government elections across the state.
The Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Nderi Mamman, made this known during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Wednesday in Lokoja.
Mamman said the Commission is fully prepared to conduct both chairmanship and councillorship elections across the state’s 21 local government areas and 239 electoral wards.
He explained that the issuance of the election notice complies with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which requires that such notice be published not later than 360 days before the scheduled election date.
According to him, the detailed timetable and schedule of activities—including party primaries, submission of candidates’ lists, publication of nominated candidates, campaign periods, and other pre-election activities—will be released on October 24, 2025.
Mamman further stated that only political parties duly registered and recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would be eligible to sponsor candidates, in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act and KOSIEC Law.
He urged political parties, aspirants, and stakeholders to strictly adhere to the Electoral Act and KOSIEC guidelines to ensure a free, fair, credible, and peaceful electoral process.
