Lagos CP: Suspects Arrested in Murder of Former Governorship Candidate Akingboye
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Ondo State, Bamidele Akingboye, was murdered, bringing clarity to the controversy surrounding his death.
Speaking to Channels Television, the Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Olorundare Jimoh, revealed that the Command had received the toxicology and autopsy results conducted on September 11, which conclusively established that Akingboye did not die a natural death.
“With the toxicology findings concluded, we await advice from the DPP so prosecution can begin against anyone found culpable of murder,” CP Jimoh stated.
Following the latest findings, police have re-arrested seven of the fourteen family members who were earlier questioned in connection with the death. In total, detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, had initially interrogated nine close relatives and aides.
One of the significant red flags investigated was a suspicious ₦50 million transfer from Akingboye’s account, allegedly shared among some immediate family members shortly before his death.
Akingboye was reported to have died on September 3, with family members claiming his body was found in the backyard of his Lagos mansion under unclear circumstances.
His first son, Samuel Akingboye, who lives in Ondo State, immediately alerted the police, insisting on a full investigation to unravel the actual cause of death.
CP Jimoh stated that the Command is now awaiting legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), after which charges will be filed against any individual found to be complicit.
