Lagos Flood Victims: File Your Insurance Claims Immediately – NIA Warns

Published

The Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has urged policyholders whose homes, vehicles, businesses and other insured assets were damaged in the recent flooding across Lagos State to immediately notify their insurers and begin the claims process.

The Association said early notification and prompt submission of the required documents would facilitate the speedy assessment and settlement of genuine claims.

In a statement issued in Lagos and signed by its Chairman, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, the NIA expressed sympathy to individuals, families and businesses affected by the flooding triggered by days of heavy rainfall.

The Association said it recognised the emotional, social and financial hardship suffered by victims, particularly those who lost loved ones, homes, vehicles, businesses and other valuable property.

While stressing the need for proper environmental sanitation, responsible waste disposal and regular clearing of drainage channels to minimise flooding, Nwachukwu noted that natural disasters could still occur despite preventive efforts.

She said the incident once again highlights the importance of insurance as a critical financial safety net for individuals and businesses.

The NIA Chairman advised affected policyholders to contact their insurance companies, brokers or agents without delay to commence the claims process, adding that member companies are committed to the prompt settlement of valid claims in line with the terms and conditions of their policies.

She also encouraged policyholders requiring assistance with claims procedures to seek guidance from their insurers, brokers, agents or the Nigerian Insurers Association.

Nwachukwu, who is also the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of REX Insurance Limited, described insurance as more than a financial product, saying it remains a vital tool for economic resilience by enabling individuals and businesses to recover quickly from unforeseen losses.

According to her, as climate-related disasters such as flooding become more frequent, adequate insurance protection is one of the most effective ways to reduce the financial impact of such events.

She extended her condolences to victims of the flooding and reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian insurance industry to restoring policyholders to their financial position before the loss through the prompt settlement of valid insurance claims.
