Lagos Was Founded by Who? Is There a Problem With This? Are We in WAEC Class Or History? — Bode George

Chief Olabode George, a former deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and military administrator, responded to Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin’s assertion that Benin founded and is the owner of Lagos.

N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, the Oba of the Benin Kingdom, claimed that the Benin established Lagos during his meeting with Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the executive governor of Lagos State. Many Nigerians have responded to the recent remarks made by the esteemed and well-respected traditional monarch in different ways.

Nigerian Tribune reported that Chief Olabode George, in an exclusive interview said; “I must confess that that statement was disappointing. I was very disappointed not only with the statement he made but also that there is no iota of truth in it. We are Lagosians. We live in Lagos. You need to take a walk round the state, should the matter of who founded Lagos be the issue now?”

He added; “Who founded Lagos? Should this be an issue? Are we in history or WAEC class? Lagos has always been there and it has grown. The population of Lagos makes it the largest state in the country. It is the economic base not only for Nigeria but for the whole of Africa. I have listened to lots of stories from every angle but the truth is, what value has it added to our existence?”

The recent statement by Chief Bode George which was shared by Nigerian Tribune on its various social media platforms have generated a lot of reactions from many Nigerians.
