Lawyer withdraws from representing Bolt driver assaulted by Abia lawmaker

Deji Adeyanju and Partners, the firm representing Stephen Abuwatseye, the e-hailing driver assaulted by Abia lawmaker, Alex Ikwechevh has withdrawn their service.

The withdrawal of legal representation was shared on X by human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju.

The notice is titled, “Public Statement on the Alleged Assualt of Mr Stephen Anuwatseye: Withdrawal of Legal Representation”.

According to Adeyanju, the firm wishes to formally announce the withdrawal of its representation on the matter.

Recall that the lawmaker had earlier assaulted the Bolt driver at his residence in the Maitama area of Abuja where he went to make a delivery for Ikwechegh.

However, in its notice, Adeyanju and Partners said, “On October 28, 2024, Mr Stephen Abuwatseye walked into our law firm, visibly distressed, and sought redress over an alleged assault.

“Following his complaint, and having verified his claim, we took steps to protect Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye’s rights, on a pro bono basis, culminating in the arraignment of the alleged assaulter.

“However, in view of recent developments and after careful consideration, we have made the decision to withdraw our legal representation in order to protect our professional integrity and maintain the highest ethical standard in the legal profession.

“We wish Mr.Stephen Abuwatseye the very best, while we assure the general public of our continuous commitment towards protecting the rights of the oppressed and indigent members of the society,” it added.

The notice by the firm comes shortly after the Bolt driver tendered an apology to the lawmaker over his (the lawmaker’s) action.

The apology by the Bolt driver also angered many Nigerians who felt the assaulted individual should not be the one apologising.
