Lead British School to condemn bullying in viral video

Lead British International School on Tuesday has condemned the viral video depicting bullying of its student and appealed to the public to refrain from sharing the videos on social media.

A viral video showing a student bullying another has sparked nationwide concerns, with many Nigerians advocating for justice for the victims.

In one video, Namtira Bwala, a student, was subjected to bullying by her schoolmate, Maryam Hassan, and another unidentified female student, with Hassan seen repeatedly slapping Bwala approximately 15 times.

In a separate video, Hassan is observed slapping Bwala multiple times while interrogating her with questions like “Who broke my heart?” and “What is the boy’s name?”

The Head of School in Abuja, Abraham Ogunkanmbi in a statement stated that it had commenced measures to assist the victim and address the misconduct of those involved.

He said, “We have also promptly launched an investigation, appointing a specialized team to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the matter,”

Adekanmbi mentioned that the team has been collecting information, which includes reviewing video recordings and interviewing witnesses, to comprehend the complete extent of the incident and determine both the immediate and underlying causes.

“In line with our commitment to preventing bullying and ensuring a safe school environment, we will be reviewing and updating our extant AntiBullying Policies and procedures to determine areas requiring improvement, with a focus on prevention and early intervention,”

“LBIS will also be implementing educational programmes and workshops for students, staff, and parents to raise awareness about bullying and its consequences.” Adekanmbi said.
