In an official statement, the Federation expressed regret for any inconvenience caused but firmly denied any foul play or intentional mishandling of the situation.
“Such incidents can occur due to routine air traffic control protocols, security checks, or logistical challenges,” the Libyan FF stated, ADDING that these are “standard procedures at airports worldwide.”
The Federation reaffirmed its respect for Nigeria’s team and reassured the public that the diversion was not deliberate.
They further rejected any allegations of sabotage by Libyan security or football officials.
The statement also referenced challenges faced by Libya’s national team during a recent trip to Nigeria for the third match of the Africa Cup of Nations qualification.
“Football unites nations, and we are committed to upholding fairness and mutual respect,” the statement added.
Libya emphasized its cultural commitment to hospitality and treating all visiting teams with dignity and respect.
The Federation concluded by calling for understanding and goodwill, stressing the importance of unity, sportsmanship, and friendship in football.
The statement comes amidst heightened tension following reports that Nigeria’s Super Eagles were stranded at the Al Abraq Airport for over 12 hours ahead of the much-anticipated AFCON qualifier.
