Manchester City have failed to reach an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain for Nigeria midfielder Jennifer Echegini after the French club rejected several offers for the 25-year-old.
BBC Sport reports that PSG consider Echegini an important player and do not want to sell her, despite the fact that she has one year left on her contract. City are trying to strengthen their squad before Thursday’s Women’s Super League transfer deadline, which comes just before the new season starts this weekend.
City’s interest has added urgency because Vivianne Miedema will miss the start of the season with a knee injury. The Netherlands international can play in both midfield and attack, leaving City looking for another player who can add quality in those areas.
Why Man City want PSG’s Echegini
Echegini was born in Nijmegen, Netherlands, but grew up in England. She played youth football with Millwall Lionesses and Arsenal before moving to the United States in 2019. At Florida State University, she became one of the standout players in college football.
Her final college season ended with Florida State winning the 2023 NCAA championship. Echegini also won the ACC Player of the Year award and the Hermann Trophy, given to the top player in American college soccer.
She began her professional career in Europe with Juventus in January 2024. In only six months in Turin, she scored 10 goals and made one assist in 16 games. She also helped Juventus qualify for the Women’s Champions League and was named the league’s best newcomer.
PSG moved quickly and signed her in July 2024 on a contract running until June 2027. She has since become an important part of the Paris midfield.
Her value to Nigeria has also grown. Echegini was part of the Super Falcons’ squad at the 2023 Women’s World Cup and played a decisive role in Nigeria’s 2025 WAFCON triumph, scoring the winning goal against Morocco in the final as Nigeria won a record-extending 10th African title.
City now have little time to change PSG’s position. The Manchester club must decide whether to make another attempt before Thursday’s deadline, with PSG already securing their place in the league phase of the Women’s Champions League qualifying round.
