Nigeria in Trouble? Bashir Ahmad Reacts to CPC Designation

Former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, has strongly reacted to the decision by President Donald Trump’s government on Friday to re-designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC).

The designation was made over allegations of genocide against Christians in the West African nation.

The move comes amid a serious conversation on the alleged massacre of Christians, with two US lawmakers and other officials insisting that approximately 7,000 have been killed in the year alone.

While the Nigerian government has consistently dismissed the claim, stating that the ongoing security crisis targets no specific religion, President Trump posted on social media that Christianity in Nigeria was facing an “existential threat.”

Reacting to the development in a post on X, Ahmad accused some Nigerian pastors of colluding with US officials who had previously advocated for the designation.

He sharply criticised the outcome, stating that those who campaigned for the designation have “landed the country in this mess.”

Ahmad immediately turned his attention to the potential consequences for Nigeria’s fight against insurgency.

“Nigeria has almost solely relied on the United States in its fight against terrorism, purchasing the majority of our sophisticated weapons from them.

“Now, with the new sanctions, how are we supposed to effectively confront the very same terrorists committing these atrocities?” He wrote.
