The Inspector- General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has officially declared February 1st, 2025, as the date when the enforcement of the Third- party Motor Insurance policy for vehicle owners will begin across Nigeria. This pivotal move comes with a strong warning: violations of this policy could result in severe penalties, including imprisonment, fines, or a combination of both.
This announcement was made during a meeting on January 10, 2025, where the IGP welcomed Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, the Commissioner for Insurance at the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), along with his team.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, it was highlighted that the Commissioner extended his congratulations to the IGP for his notable accomplishments, particularly the establishment of the Police Insurance Company Limited. He underscored the necessity for police involvement in ensuring public adherence to insurance regulations and sought the Nigeria Police Force’ s (NPF) cooperation in the nationwide enforcement of this compulsory third- party insurance, which is designed to offer significant protections for all road users.
During the meeting, the IGP reiterated the critical nature of third- party insurance, emphasizing that the enforcement of the relevant laws will commence as scheduled on February 1, 2025. He pointed out that, according to Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act, it is mandatory for all vehicle owners to obtain third- party insurance before utilizing their vehicles on public roads.
