Obasanjo Urges Athletes to Embrace Camaraderie and Build Lasting Bonds!

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has charged participating athletes at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged ‘Gateway Games 2024’ to embrace the camaraderie, build lasting relationships even as they celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship ‘in pluralism and peace’.

Obasanjo gave charged yesterday in a statement issued to welcome the participating teams from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, urging not only the participating athletes but all Nigerians to reflect on the essence of the games and not only the ecstasy it brought.

In the statement titled: ‘A Triumph Of The Spirit’, which was signed by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former Nigerian leader declared that NSF has over the years, served as a beacon of unity, particularly in ‘rebuilding the bonds of peace and mutual respect after the civil war’.

Obasanjo particularly stated that NSF has continued to bring people together, fostering friendships across cultural divides and preparing athletes for future challenges.

“As we gather in Abeokuta for the 22nd National Sports Festival, let us reflect on the essence of these Games.

“Since their inception in Lagos in 1973, the festival has been more than a competition. It has served as a beacon of unity, rebuilding the bonds of peace and mutual respect after the Civil War. Today, it continues to bring people together, fostering friendships across cultural divides and preparing athletes for future challenges.

“But the true spirit of these games lies beyond medals or state rankings. It is found in courage, perseverance and the joy of participation”, emphasizing that the thrill of competition is not about the scoreboard, but about embracing the love of sport itself.

“The sacrifice, determination is and grit—the qualities that brought each of you here—are victories in their own right.

“For some, the journey to compete may not lead to a podium finish, but the effort and resilience shown are monumental achievements. These Gateway Games celebrate that indomitable spirit, the drive to push through pain, overcome obstacles, and pursue excellence.

“In sports, we find a unique connection that transcends politics and language barriers. Now, as we gather here, I encourage you to embrace the camaraderie, build lasting relationships, and enjoy this celebration of pluralism and peace.

“May these Games bring joy, unity, and the triumph of the human spirit,” the former President stated as he welcomed the participating athletes to Ogun State.
