Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost its status as Nigeria’s leading opposition party, blaming deep internal divisions rather than external pressure from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Fayose also identified former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as a major political force ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying Obi’s reported move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has significantly boosted the party’s relevance.
The former governor made the remarks during an interview on Arise News, where he assessed the state of opposition politics and the shifting political landscape.
According to Fayose, the PDP’s decline is self-inflicted.
“You must be very honest. When you are weak, there is always a tendency to gravitate towards the stronger side,” he said.
He dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu was responsible for the PDP’s woes, insisting the party’s problems were internal.
“The challenges in the PDP are not the fault of Asiwaju, the president. The failure in my home is not the fault of my neighbour,” Fayose said.
Describing the party as fractured, he added, “The PDP is a house that is divided against itself.”
On the broader opposition space, Fayose noted that Nigerian politics typically revolves around two dominant parties at any given time and pointed to the ADC as an emerging force following Obi’s reported defection.
“Are we saying ADC is not dominant? Recently, Obi moved there. And I’ve said it before, Obi is the only life in ADC,” he said.
When it was pointed out that other political heavyweights, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, are associated with the ADC, Fayose responded that their influence has waned.
“I’m not saying they are not human beings. I’m saying they are largely spent forces,” he said.
Fayose stressed that Obi remains the key factor driving ADC’s relevance.
“Let Obi move to any other party, even Accord. Obi is the only traction, the only meaning, the only factor in ADC that matters,” he said.
He added that Obi’s presence alone has altered the party’s political standing, whether or not he ultimately wins the election.
“If Obi had not gone to ADC, I’m not saying he will win or not win the election, but without him, the party’s situation would be worse than before their coming together,” Fayose stated.
Meanwhile, a leader of the ADC, Dele Momodu, has expressed confidence that President Tinubu can be defeated in 2027 if the opposition adopts a strategic and united approach.
Speaking on Arise Television, Momodu said the ruling APC is vulnerable if the opposition “does its maths correctly.”
He disclosed that the ADC is undergoing constitutional reforms and coalition-building efforts aimed at repositioning the party as a disciplined and credible alternative ahead of the next general elections.
“When there is a coalition, everyone is equal. What the party seeks to do is to be different from others,” Momodu said.
He added that “discipline, unity, and strategic candidate selection” are key factors that could unseat the APC in 2027.
