Ogun farmers kill herdsman, cut body parts for ritual

Four farmers have been detained by Ogun state Police command agents for allegedly killing and dismembering the body of a herder, Umaru Aliyu, in the village of Ijagunre in the Imeko- Afon local government area of Ogun state.

a statement by SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the spokesperson of the command, says the suspects identified as Akinyele Adebayo, Gbalo Idosu, Abiala Segun and Kareem Fagbemi Lana, were arrested following a report lodged by one Umaru Jakake, who stated that while he and his brother Umaru Aliyu were grazing their cattle at Ijagunre village, they were accosted by one Ojugbele who warned them not to take their cattle near his farm.

He went on to say that after receiving the warning, they moved their cattle to the other side of the bush to graze. However, the aforementioned Ojugbele later called two men, who began pursuing them through the underbrush.

The complainant went on to say that although he had been able to flee, his brother Umaru Aliyu’ s whereabouts remained unknown.

Oyeyemi added that the incident was reported at the Imeko divisional headquarters but was sent to the State Criminal Investigation Departments Eleweran for a covert investigation at the direction of the Police Commissioner.

The case was given to the SP Kehinde Beyioku- led Homicide section, which immediately started a technical and intelligence- based investigation to find the missing herdsman’ s whereabouts.

‘ ‘ There investigation led to the arrest of Kareem Fagbemi Lana, who confessed to the police that it was one Ojugbele who called him from his own farm to inform him of the presence of herdsmen in their farm vicinity, and that he should come and join him to chase them away. ”

He further admitted that he also called Abiala Segun, who arrived with his dane gun and the three of them began pursuing the herdsmen. Kareem Fagbemi Lana grabbed the dane gun and killed one of the herdsmen, Umaru Aliyu, while pursuing them.

They invited Akinyele Adebayo, whose farm is nearby, and told him about the incident after they had killed him. Akinyele Adebayo was the one who assisted them in dismembering the body after explaining that he needed the deceased’ s head for a ritual and getting their consent to take it.

As soon as they arrived in Tamake town, they took the body’ s remaining pieces and buried them in front of Gbalo Idosu’ s home. Ojugbele is still on the run, but three others were taken into custody as a result of Kareem Fagbemi Lana’ s confession. The police have located the deceased’ s head and other body parts. According to Oyeyemi.

The police spokesperson continued by saying that the state commissioner of police, CP Olanrewaju Oladimeji, had directed a massive manhunt to find the gang member who had fled after praising the Homicide team for their painstaking investigation.

He said that the CP has also ordered that the suspects who have been arrested be taken to court as soon as the investigation is finished.
