In blatant disregard of a court order, MultiChoice Nigeria Limited has proceeded to hike the subscription rates for its DStv and GOtv bouquets.
This move drew outrage from Nigerians as it took the decision in defiance of an interim injunction from the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in Abuja.
The CCPT issued a clear injunction on Monday, restraining MultiChoice Nigeria from adjusting its subscription prices, which were slated to increase on May 1. Despite this, reports indicate that the new higher rates have already been implemented, much to the chagrin of millions of subscribers.
“This ruling by the CCPT was initially perceived as a win for consumers grappling with economic challenges,” remarked a consumer rights advocate. “However, MultiChoice’s recent actions raise serious questions about its commitment to ethical business conduct and adherence to the law.”
The defiance of the court order has triggered widespread outrage among consumers, who perceive it as a betrayal by MultiChoice, accusing the company of disregarding both the legal system and the interests of its customers.
In a twist to the controversy, the Tribunal has approved an application for substituted service of the interim order, following reports that officers at MultiChoice’s Abuja office refused to accept the court documents.
Festus Onifade, the applicant in the case, informed NAN that a senior manager at the Abuja office directed that any documents should be sent to their Lagos headquarters instead.
“The Tribunal has responded by allowing substituted service in accordance with Section 48 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018 and Part N, Order 14 Rule 11(1) of the CCPT Rule, 2021,” stated Saratu Shafii, presiding over the Tribunal. This decision underscores the Tribunal’s commitment to ensuring MultiChoice’s compliance with its orders.
