Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde Speaks on the Only Defection That Would Move Him
Governor Makinde Reveals the Only Political Defection That Will Shock Him

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has stated that the recent wave of political defections and realignments in the country is not of great importance to ordinary Nigerians.
The Governor made the declaration in a fresh reaction to the recent defections of some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, according to him, the only defection that will move him is when hunger defects into the APC and Nigerians become prosperous.
Naija News reports that the Governor made the submission in his bi-monthly newsletter released on Thursday, stressing that many Nigerians are battling economic hardship and how to survive the situation, hence are not too concerned about the recent political defections.
According to him, the defection of hunger and poverty from the country is the most important defection Nigerians can witness.
“I am sure many of you have been following the recent defections of politicians, especially the governors who have left the PDP for the APC and other parties.
“With these defections, political pundits have been busy reading meanings into every handshake and silence. I have watched as our national conversation once again turns to who is moving rather than what is moving.”
“When I was asked about this wave of cross-carpeting in a recent press conference, I said I would only be moved when hunger defects into the APC. I meant every word of it.
“Families are being forced to make impossible choices daily. These are the real issues, not political realignments,” he said.
Nigerians Will Determine 2027 Outcome
Speaking further, Makinde said the gale of defections would not determine the outcome of the 2027 elections in Nigeria, arguing that only the citizens would determine who their leaders are.
He lamented the widening inequality gap and frustration many citizens are facing in the country, stressing that “it is hunger, not partisanship, that fuels despair.”
He said the PDP must continue its rebuilding process and regain the trust of Nigerians, particularly as citizens seek a way out of the worsening economic hardship caused by the APC government.
“No matter what the analysts predict, it is the Nigerian people who will decide the 2027 elections. Our job in the PDP is to prove we can deliver relief where others have brought pain.
“Nigerians remember when salaries had value, when businesses could plan, and when hope was not an illusion. Our task now is to rebuild that trust and restore the PDP as a platform that prioritises people over politics,” he said.
Governor Makinde added that the PDP will use its upcoming National Convention to reset and restrategize. He called on the citizens to refuse to normalise hardship.
“Let others defect for convenience; let us stand firm for conscience. When hunger finally defects, prosperity will return, and so will our pride as a people,” the governor added.
He also criticized the APC government, saying policies that drag the people into poverty are not worth defending.
“Economic decisions are not about numbers. “Every decision that takes money out of people’s pockets moves them closer to poverty. My belief is that our politics must serve humanity,” he stated.
