Pete Edochie, the veteran actor, has expressed serious concern over the worsening economic conditions in Nigeria, highlighting the high cost of securing basic amenities like electricity.
At 78 years old, the actor revealed that managing daily energy needs has become a significant financial challenge for him.
Speaking as a guest on the AIT programme JIGSAW, Edochie detailed the heavy expenses involved in keeping his household powered, describing the situation as deeply troubling.
His disclosure sheds light on how the economic realities are affecting not only ordinary citizens but also prominent figures in the country.
Edochie provided a breakdown of his daily electricity-related expenditures, explaining that he spends approximately N40,000 each day to maintain power in his home.
Of this amount, N10,000 goes toward purchasing electricity units from the national distribution company.
Another N20,000 is spent operating a diesel generator, while an additional N10,000 is used to fuel a petrol generator.
The actor’s account highlights the multiple layers of cost involved in securing basic electricity, showing how unreliable public power supply forces individuals to rely on expensive alternatives.
The figure he shared demonstrates the significant financial burden that energy insecurity places on households across Nigeria.
Beyond personal expense, Edochie spoke about the broader implications of the economic challenges in the country.
He criticised the perceived indifference of political leaders toward the struggles faced by ordinary Nigerians.
According to him, public officials appear unconcerned about the worsening conditions that affect citizens’ daily lives, including access to infrastructure, electricity, and other essential services.
He suggested that some decisions by authorities have actively contributed to slowing development, particularly in certain regions, leaving citizens to bear the consequences of policy neglect.
The actor also drew attention to infrastructure gaps, specifically referencing the south-east region.
He alleged that development in the area has been deliberately undermined, pointing to setbacks in rail transport as an example.
According to Edochie, the neglect of infrastructure not only limits economic opportunities but also reflects a failure to address long-standing regional inequalities.
His remarks illustrate the broader frustration among citizens regarding inadequate public services and the lack of attention given to solving structural challenges.
He said, “Nobody seems to be bothered about what is happening to the common man. Why must it keep getting worse in each new day? Can we not improve? There was a time when somebody cut off the Southeast in terms of railway transportation. Why must there be consistency in going backwards?.”
