Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the Federal Government over the recurring collapse of the national electricity grid, describing it as a national embarrassment and evidence of leadership failure.
Obi made the remarks in a statement shared on his X handle on Saturday, following the latest collapse of the power grid in January 2026.
According to him, the grid collapse marked the beginning of another year of what he termed “national shame,” recalling that the first grid collapse of 2025 occurred in January and was followed by several others throughout the year.
“It is utterly disappointing that for three consecutive years, from 2023 to 2025, our nation has been ranked as having the least access to electricity globally, with nearly 100 million citizens left without power,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor compared Nigeria’s electricity generation capacity with that of other African countries, noting a glaring disparity despite Nigeria’s population advantage.
He stated that South Africa, with a population of about 64 million people, generates and distributes over 40,000 megawatts of electricity, while Egypt, with about 115 million people, also produces over 40,000 megawatts. Algeria, he added, with a population of around 48 million, generates and distributes more than 50,000 megawatts.
In contrast, Obi said Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country with over 240 million people, produces only about 5,000 megawatts, a figure he described as “absurdly low” and detrimental to national productivity.
He attributed the persistent power crisis to what he called continuous leadership failures, stressing that the power sector is critical to national development and requires competent and committed leadership to function effectively.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Obi urged Nigerians to prioritise competence and empathy in leadership, insisting that the country needs leaders with the capacity and dedication to drive a major turnaround.
“As we look towards 2027, Nigeria must prioritise competence and empathy in its leadership. Anything less is unacceptable,” he said.
