Peter Obi Breaks Silence On Rescue Of Kidnapped Oyo Schoolchildren And Teachers

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has reacted to the rescue of the schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

In a post shared on his X account on Saturday, Obi expressed joy over the victims’ freedom and commended the security personnel and others whose efforts contributed to their rescue.

He noted that the successful operation deserved thanksgiving but stressed that children should never be subjected to the trauma of abduction.

According to him, the repeated cases of kidnappings, particularly those involving schoolchildren, highlight the need for stronger security measures and greater commitment by the government to protecting lives and property.

Obi also maintained that every child should be able to receive an education in a safe environment free from fear, adding that Nigeria must continue working towards a future where schools are protected from violence and criminal attacks.

The former Anambra State governor congratulated the rescued children, their families, their schools and Nigerians on the development, expressing optimism that a better Nigeria remains achievable.

The statement reads, “The Children’s Safe Return Is Worthy of Thanksgiving.

“I am greatly relieved and delighted to learn of the safe rescue of the schoolchildren who were kidnapped. I sincerely thank all those whose tireless efforts made their freedom possible, especially the security personnel and everyone who worked behind the scenes.

“While we celebrate this happy outcome, we must remember that no child should ever have to endure such trauma. The recurring incidents of kidnapping, particularly of schoolchildren, underscore the urgent need to strengthen our security architecture and make the protection of lives and property the foremost responsibility of government.

“Our children deserve to learn in an atmosphere of safety, not fear. We must continue to work towards building a Nigeria where every child can pursue education without the threat of violence or abduction.

“I rejoice with the children, their families, their schools, and all Nigerians on this heartening development.”

Tribune Online recalls that 39 pupils and seven teachers were kidnapped on May 15 after gunmen invaded Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esiele, and Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota. The attack also claimed the lives of a teacher and a commercial motorcyclist.
