Police in Abuja Start the Trial of Employees Alleged to Have Harassed a Woman

The Nigerian Police Force has begun the trail of a police officer who was alleged to have harassed a woman in the Federal Capital Territory on October 6, 2024.

The trial of the officer is being conducted by the leadership of the FCT Police Command after the woman in a viral video alleged that she was slapped by the policeman.

According to the woman, the incident took place in the Galadimawa area of Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city where the officer also allegedly used pepper spray on her eyes.

She claimed that the policeman harassed her during a stop-and-search routine by officers at the Galadimawa Roundabout.

Her words, “I didn’t do anything to these guys, I didn’t carry anything, I am not a criminal. They asked me to come, I told them they could check my back and there was no need for me to come down.”

She added that the police officers immediately started using the pepper spray on her eyes and slapped her.

She said, “These guys started harassing me and used pepper spray on my eyes three times and slapped me.”

In a reaction to the allegation made by the women, the FCT command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh said trial on the case has commenced.

Adeh in a post on X said the victim of the harassment has come to the police command and identified the officer involved in the matter.

Stating that necessary disciplinary measures had already started against the alleged action of the officer, Adeh urged residents of the FCT to always report any form of police brutality or misconduct through the Police complaint contacts.

She said, “The police officer assigned to Galadimawa Roundabout for stop-and-search duties, who was seen harassing a woman at night on October 6, 2024, has been summoned.

“The victim has come forward and identified the officer involved. Disciplinary action and a trial have also commenced,” the police spokesperson said on X.
