Anthony Dennis looked destined to become the latest Nigerian to test himself in English football this summer, but Coventry City’s pursuit has stalled.
The newly promoted English Premier League side, managed by Frank Lampard, had identified the Göztepe midfielder as one of their priority targets after monitoring his progress in the Turkish Super Lig.
However, fresh reports from Footy-Africa indicate that negotiations have cooled considerably, with the biggest stumbling block being Göztepe’s valuation of the player.
Rather than matching the Turkish club’s asking price, Coventry have stepped back from negotiations, leaving Dennis’ future open once again despite interest from clubs across Germany, Belgium and Turkey.
Why Coventry pulled back from signing Anthony Dennis
According to Footy-Africa, Göztepe are demanding around €9 million for Dennis despite the Nigerian entering the final year of his contract.
That figure has proven difficult for Coventry to justify. Although Dennis remains highly regarded by the English club, sources close to the deal have opined that the EFL Championship winners would withdraw from negotiations rather than overpay.
For Coventry, it is a calculated financial decision. Investing close to €9 million in a player who could potentially leave on a free transfer within a year is too much of a gamble.
Göztepe’s risky strategy
From Göztepe’s perspective, the decision is equally understandable. Dennis has developed into one of their most valuable assets since arriving from HB Academy and signing a new three-year contract in 2024.
Selling him below their asking fee could send the wrong message, particularly when several clubs have shown interest.
Besides Coventry, Trabzonspor, Galatasaray, Anderlecht and German side SV Elversberg have all monitored the midfielder in recent months.
The Turkish club therefore believe another bidder will eventually meet their demands. However, there is also considerable risk attached to that strategy.
Every week that passes reduces Dennis’ market value as his contract edges closer to expiry. Should no club meet Göztepe’s valuation before the window closes, they could eventually be forced into accepting a lower fee or risk losing him for nothing when his deal expires.
Germany still looks like the smartest destination
Only a month ago, Afrik-Foot identified Germany as arguably the best next step in Dennis’ career.
Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig were highlighted as two clubs capable of accelerating his development through structured coaching, tactical discipline and clear pathways for young players.
Those arguments remain valid today. Bundesliga clubs have built reputations around developing emerging talents before selling them to Europe’s elite.
Frankfurt’s track record with players such as Omar Marmoush, Hugo Ekitike and Randal Kolo Muani demonstrates the value of patience, while Leipzig have consistently transformed young prospects into Champions League performers.
For Dennis, regular development may be more important than an immediate move to England, meaning he could follow in the footsteps of Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika.
Why the transfer battle is far from over
Coventry’s decision to cool negotiations should not be interpreted as the end of the race.
Should Göztepe soften their stance or fail to attract higher offers elsewhere, Coventry could yet return with an improved proposal closer to their own valuation.
Equally, the continued interest from clubs in Germany, Belgium and Turkey ensures Dennis is unlikely to remain short of admirers.
The coming weeks may therefore become less about whether Anthony Dennis leaves Göztepe and more about which club is prepared to strike the right balance between his talent, his contract situation and the Turkish side’s ambitious asking price.
