On Wednesday, December 13, the federal government lead by President Bola Tinubu declared that it was not involved in the ongoing political unrest in Rivers State.
Remember that the ex-Rivers governor’s supporters, Nyesom Wike, the minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), and Governor Siminalayi Fubara are all involved in the crisis.
According to the Vanguard, the Bola Tinubu administration emphatically declared that Wike’s position was not shared by the government.
Mohammed Idris, the minister of information and national orientation, stated this in a chat with state house correspondents after briefing on the outcomes of the federal executive council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Tinubu at the presidential villa in Abuja. Leadership newspaper also noted the FG’s stance.
Asked whether the federal government shares Wike’s position on the matter as a member of the federal cabinet, the information minister replied:
“Well, he is a federal cabinet member; he is involved in the situation in the state. That cannot be a federal government position. How can it be the federal government’s position? he asked.
Wike have been at loggerheads with his successor, Fubara over the control of the political structure in the state.
The crisis between the two politicians heightened last month, culminating in an attempted impeachment of Fubara.
Despite President Bola Tinubu’s reported intervention to restore peace in the state, there are speculations that the political crisis is far from being resolved.
Early this month, Wike said he would do all it takes to maintain his ” political structure” in Rivers state.
“Nobody can take away the political structure in Rivers. Nobody can intimidate me. If I want to do something, I will do it. The impeachment is not a military coup, it is provided under the constitution, ” Wike had said.
