The court investigating Gomez did not provide further details as the case is sealed and preliminary, but confirmed it had followed a complaint raised by anti-graft campaign group Manos Limpias – Clean Hands – whose leader has links to the far-right

Sanchez has been Prime Minister of Spain since 2018.

An economist by education, Sanchez was chief of cabinet to the U.N. envoy to Bosnia, Carlos Westendorp, in the late 1990s.

In 2003 he took a position as a city council member in Madrid and then climbed up the Socialist party ladder, first becoming a lawmaker and then party leader in 2014.

He has served as Secretary-General of the Socialist Workers’ Party since June 2017.
