Reactions As Court Nullifies Alex Otti’s Candidature And All LP Candidates In Abia And Kano States

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has nullified the candidature of the Abia State Governor-elect, Alex Otti, and all Labour Party candidates in Abia and Kano States. The court presided over by Justice M N Yunusa said that the emergence of the candidates in the two states did not comply with the provisions of the 2022 electoral act.

According to the report by Daily Post on Friday May 19th, the suit was filed against the Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by Mr Ibrahim Haruna Ibrahim.

In his ruling, the judge said – “The party that has not complied with the provisions of the electoral act cannot be said to have candidate in an election and cannot be declared winner of an election; this being so, the votes credited to the 1st Defendant is a wasted vote.”

The report came as a surprise to many people, especially to supporters of the Labour Party, and some of them have taken to the comments section to share their views on the issue. Some questioned if a Kano court has the power to pass judgment over an election case in Abia State, and nullify an election that was held in Abia. Some also said that it is the tribunal that can sit on post-election matters.
