The House made the call on Thursday, October 10, following a motion raised by Peter Aniekwe and co-sponsored by the House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda and four others.
The lawmakers urged the FG to refrain from adding more economic burden on Nigerians by adapting to unnecessary taxes but look for innovative ways to generate revenues.
Speaking while presenting the motion, Aniekwe said the imposition of multiple taxes, levies, and charges at various levels of government only increases the pain and suffering experienced by the people.
Noting that Nigerians are struggling to meet up in very low-income brackets, the lawmaker said the government must be able to strike a balance for the good of its citizens.
He said, “The government’s primary responsibility is to alleviate the economic challenges faced by the masses, ensuring policies that promote economic development, social welfare, and prosperity for all citizens.”
The motion by the five lawmakers was adopted by the House of Representatives while FG was urged to seek alternative strategies to generate revenue.
Also, the House Committee on Finance and the FIRS was mandated to conduct a review of already existing tax and policies to end redundant or multiple taxation.
