Retired Police Officers Set New Date For ‘Father Of All Protests,’ Renew Call To Exit CPS

The Nigerian Union of Retired Police Officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) has announced a new date for its planned mass protest.

This was contained in a statement released by the union on X and signed by Retired CSP Mannir M. Lawal Zaria, Chairman of the Kaduna State chapter, along with other members of the organizing committee.

According to the statement, the protest, which was earlier scheduled for September 29, will now hold on October 14, 2025, at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.

The retirees said the demonstration was postponed because the National Assembly had gone on recess.

They explained that the protest aims to draw attention to the severe hardship caused by the Contributory Pension Scheme, which they claim has left thousands of former police officers in poverty and neglect.

“The CPS has condemned thousands of retired police officers to untold hardship, poverty, and avoidable deaths,” the statement said.

The union added that many of its members can no longer feed their families, pay medical bills, or afford their children’s education. “Rising costs of living have worsened our situation, and many are dying rampantly due to neglect,” it added.

The retired officers said they have no choice but to take to the streets to demand that lawmakers remove them from the current pension arrangement.

“With all these challenges, we have no option but to stage this demonstration to appeal to lawmakers to exit retired police officers from the Contributory Pension Scheme,” the statement read.

They also vowed that once the protest begins, they and their families will remain at the National Assembly until further notice.

The Union then called on all retired police officers across the country and their families to gather in large numbers at the National Assembly in Abuja on October 14 for what they described as “the father of all peaceful demonstrations.”
