Russia says it is committed to helping African countries achieve ‘genuine’ independence

In an article published on January 6 by Russia in Global Affairs, Russia reaffirmed its commitment to helping African nations achieve genuine independence.

Alexey Drobinin, a diplomat from Russia’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that Africa is in a unique position to emerge as a powerful and independent force in a world that is shifting towards multipolarity rather than being dominated by one.

Drobinin underscored the importance of African nations working together to end colonial domination and exploitation by foreign powers.

At a forum in Moscow titled ‘Russia-Africa: What’s Next?’, another official, Anatoly Bashkin, stated that Russia and Africa share the inherent commitment to standing up for genuine sovereignty and pushing back against Western influence.

Here are some of the main points highlighted in the article:

Championing African Unity

Russia supports the idea of Pan-Africanism, as represented by the African Union (AU). According to Drobinin, the AU plays a key role in enhancing Africa’s voice and influence in global conversations, enabling countries to collaborate and present a united front.

“The African Union is the embodiment of pan-African beginnings. Consolidating countries on a continental platform, it increasingly raises its voice in world politics on behalf of all Africans,” he stated.

Addressing Colonial Past

Russia has always been a vocal critic of colonialism and the exploitation of Africa and Africans by the Western world. In the article, Drobinin pointed out that the impact of imperialism in Africa created a system of economic exploitation that benefitted Europe at the cost of Africa.

“Africa is the continent most affected by colonialism, and for centuries has been ruthlessly plundered by Europeans, extracting human and material resources from it,” he said. Africa remains on the periphery of the global division of labor, serving as a supplier of inexpensive raw materials and a consumer market for high-value goods. This unequal exchange is deliberately maintained by Western nations to advance their own development at the expense of others.

Commitment to Independence

The new Foreign Policy Concept, adopted by the Russian government reflects a dedication to aiding Africa in becoming a prominent player on the global stage. President Vladimir Putin has made it clear that he is offering “total support” for Africa, including building strong ties and helping out in the struggle against terrorism and extremism.
