Samsung displaces Apple as World’s top smartphone maker

As Chinese competitors close the gap on both market leaders, Samsung has reclaimed its position as the best-selling smartphone, overtaking Apple once again, according to a report released on Monday by industry tracker International Data Corporation.

based in South Korea According to IDC, which cited preliminary data, Samsung surpassed Apple as global smartphone shipments increased by almost 8% to 289.4 million in the first quarter of this year.

According to IDC, the global smartphone market grew for a third straight quarter, indicating that the industry is beginning to recover from a downturn.

Vice president Ryan Reith of IDC Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers team predicted that as the recovery moves forward, leading smartphone companies will increase their market share while smaller brands will fight for market share.

According to IDC data, Samsung shipped 60.1 million smartphones in the first quarter of this year, accounting for nearly 21% of the market.

According to IDC, Apple shipped 50.1 million iPhones during that time, accounting for slightly more than 17 percent of the market.

According to the market tracker, Samsung smartphone shipments decreased by less than one percent, while Apple smartphone shipments decreased by 9.6 percent on a quarter-over-quarter basis.

According to IDC, China-based Xiaomi saw shipments increase by roughly 33% to 40.8 million and by approximately 85% to 28.5 million, placing them in third and fourth place in the overall smartphone market.

“While Apple managed to capture the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung successfully reasserted itself as the leading smartphone provider in the first quarter,” Reith said.

According to Reith, IDC anticipates that Samsung and Apple will continue to dominate the premium smartphone market, while Chinese rivals aim to increase sales.

“There is a shift in power among the Top 5 companies, which will likely continue as market players adjust their strategies in a post-recovery world,” stated Nabila Popal, research director with IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team.

“Xiaomi is coming back strong from the large declines experienced over the past two years and Transsion is becoming a stable presence in the Top 5 with aggressive growth in international markets.”
