Governor Ademola Adeleke’s elder brother Deji Adeleke has urged security and electoral officers to be neutral in the forthcoming governorship poll in Osun State.
He frowned at the involvement of police officers and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in election malpracticees. The industrialist urged to them to be neutral.
Speaking on yesterday at the 12th Convocation Ceremony of Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, the industrialist lamented that complicity in rigging and result manipulation continues to undermine Nigeria’s democracy and discourage foreign investors wary of political instability.
He recalled that foreign financiers had once questioned the viability of investing in Nigeria due to elections marred by violence, vote manipulation, and injustice. “Until Nigerians ensure that votes truly count and uphold the integrity of the electoral process, the country will keep losing investment opportunities to other nations,” he warned.
Highlighting the challenges ahead of the forthcoming Osun election, Adeleke noted: “Osun has 3,763 polling units. It is humanly impossible for the INEC chairman to be at all those units at the same time. Yet, young people entrusted with this responsibility collect money and alter figures, while policemen—who also want a good future for their children—aid and abet the process. People are killed just because of elections.”
He described the situation as painful, stressing that Nigerians are brilliant people but are perceived as “primitive and backward” due to electoral malpractice. He added: “The implication is that Nigeria will continue to regret it if it doesn’t change immediately. But it’s not too late to start all over.”
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of Adeleke University, Professor Solomon Adebola, announced that 1,375 students graduated from the institution. Of these, 1,211 completed undergraduate studies, with 190 earning First Class degrees, 655 Second Class Upper, 337 Second Class Lower, and 29 Third Class. He added that 164 students graduated from postgraduate programmes.
