Explosion in Abuja: Police Confirm Incident and Ongoing Investigation

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has officially confirmed a recent blast that occurred within Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja.
Earlier reports indicated a suspected bomb explosion on Monday, resulting in at least one fatality. Authorities also reported injuries to another individual, believed to have been caused by an improvised explosive device (IED).
An eyewitness, a military personnel who requested anonymity, described seeing what appeared to be a suicide bomber being neutralized by an explosive device tucked inside a rubber can near Mogadishu Barracks.
In an official statement, SP Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, provided details but did not specify casualty figures. She quoted the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, as saying:
“On May 26, 2025, at approximately 2:
50 PM, the FCT Police received an emergency report about an explosion along the Mararaba-Nyanya bypass.
“Quick response teams from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit were deployed immediately. The affected area was cordoned off to facilitate investigation and ensure the safety of commuters and residents.
“One male victim was rescued from the scene and rushed to the hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
“A detailed investigation including forensic analysis has been launched to determine the cause and nature of the explosion.
“The police urge the public to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, emphasizing that there is no cause for widespread alarm at this time.”
Security Concerns Continue: Kidnapping Incidents in Abuja Suburbs
In a separate development, residents of Grow Homes Estate in the Chikakore district of Kubwa—Abuja’s largest suburban neighborhood—were left shaken after an early morning raid by heavily armed kidnappers. The incident took place between midnight and 1:
30 AM, with the assailants moving freely within the estate for over an hour.
Eyewitnesses reported that at least one man and one woman were abducted during the attack. However, by dawn, the woman was found unhurt and released by the kidnappers within the estate.
A resident recounted:
“The attack started around midnight. The assailants were heavily armed and overpowered our local vigilante group. The police arrived around 1:
00 AM, engaging the attackers in a fierce gun battle that lasted about half an hour. We are urging the authorities to improve security here, including fixing the road for better access and establishing a police station nearby for quicker response times.”
The FCT Police Command confirmed the incident through SP Josephine Adeh, who stated:
“On the night of May 26, 2025, at approximately 1:
00 AM, officers stationed in front of Grow Homes Estate, Kuchibuyi village, Byazhin, responded to a distress call reporting an armed attack and kidnapping attempt.
“Upon arrival, it was discovered that the criminals had breached the estate through the rear perimeter fence and abducted two residents. The responding officers engaged the kidnappers in a gunfight lasting around 40 minutes, rescuing one victim identified as Chinyere Joe. The second victim remains missing, with efforts ongoing to locate and rescue her.
“The Anti-Kidnapping Unit, in coordination with the military and other security agencies, has launched a targeted operation to track down the suspects and secure the safe return of the remaining hostage.”
