Shockingly, Changing Laws Won’t Solve Our Elections Crisis—Find Out What Really Needs to Change!

The President of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, has said altering the nation’s Electoral Act may not birth credible election in the country.
Osigwe (SAN) said Nigerians deserve a credible, free and fair electoral process that would reflect the desire for good governance.
Naija News reports that Osigwe stated this on Monday when he received a delegation from the National Democratic Institute (NDI), led by its Director, Ben Aga, at the NBA House for a thoughtful advocacy and consultative meeting on electoral reform in Nigeria.
The meeting explored how the NBA could support efforts to improve electoral accountability, ensure the timely resolution of election disputes, and advocate for the establishment of an Electoral Offenses Commission.
Speaking to the delegates, Osigwe said, “Nigerians, especially our young people, are demanding credible elections, justice for electoral offenses, and institutions they can trust.”
He assured that NBA is committed to electoral laws reform. He, however, noted that while amendment of electoral laws were important, there has to be change of mindset and political culture in the country.
“While laws are important, I believe that real change must begin with reforming mindsets and political culture. As I have said before, justice must not be lost in technicalities,” he stated.
Osigwe promised that the NBA would continue to be a voice of reason, a pillar of accountability, and a partner for democratic deepening in Nigeria.
