On Wednesday, the House of Representatives held a valedictory session to dissolve the 9th assembly. Emotions ran high as Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila gave an emotion-filled speech, expressing his gratitude towards his colleagues and describing the privilege to serve as an honour of his life. He also highlighted joint efforts made by members towards nation building to keep the dreams of Nigeria’s founding fathers alive. Gbajabiamila spoke on how the House has drastically changed in his time as Speaker, highlighting significant strides made in sectors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Police Reform Bill, Electoral Acts Amendment Bill, and Constitutional Review.
The Speaker urged members to ensure their actions will not be found wanting when the time comes for final judgment. The session was attended by former speakers, house leaders and some former clerks of the National Assembly. In these last four years, the 9th Assembly has left a mark on every sector of the nation’s life, and Gbajabiamila thanked his colleagues for enriching his life and how much of an impact they have made on the House.
