Sundowns Humiliate Remo Stars in Abeokuta, Record Nigeria’s Worst Home Defeat in CAF History
CAF Shock: Mamelodi Sundowns Thrash Remo Stars 6-0 in Abeokuta, Nigeria’s Heaviest Home Loss Ever
South African club, Mamelodi Sundowns produced a masterful display in Abeokuta on Sunday, thrashing Remo Stars 5-1 in a CAF Champions League clash that left the Nigerian champions stunned.
Mamelodi Sundowns, known as The Brazilians, were ruthless from start to finish as they forced Remo Stars to record the heaviest home defeat ever suffered by a Nigerian team in continental competition.
Remo started brightly, pressing high and showing early intent. Adama Goita’s deflected shot and Victor Mbaoma’s near miss hinted at promise, but the game quickly slipped out of their grasp.
In the 12th minute, Neo Maema sliced open the defence with a clever pass to Lesiba Nku, who squared for Thapelo Matthews to slot past Obassa Adebiyi.
The goal silenced the MKO Abiola Stadium and set the tone for a brutal afternoon.
Despite occasional flashes of fight, Remo struggled to find their rhythm. Their efforts were undone by defensive errors, and Sundowns made them pay.
Moments before halftime, Peter Shalulile capitalised on a lapse at the back to make it 2-0, leaving the Nigerian side reeling before the break.
After the restart, the visitors tightened their grip. In the 61st minute, Khuliso Mudau surged down the right and picked out Miguel “Reinsinho” Reinildo, who finished calmly for his first goal in African competition.
Remo Stars resistance collapsed entirely soon after, with substitute Arthur Sales sweeping home a fourth in the 75th minute.
Two minutes later, Samson Olasupo gave the crowd a brief moment to cheer, firing a low shot into the net after a neat setup from Goita. It was a consolation at best.
Sundowns restored their four-goal lead in the 87th minute when Tsiki Nsabeleng, a South African with Nigerian roots, scored his first senior goal for the club to seal a memorable victory.
By the time the final whistle blew, the damage was complete. The 5-1 defeat was not only a record loss but also a brutal reminder of the gap between Nigeria’s emerging sides and Africa’s elite.
Remo’s usually disciplined defence, which had impressed in their previous outing against Comoros’ US Zilimadjou, was shredded by Sundowns’ slick movement and ruthless finishing.
Coach Daniel Ogunmodede’s men dream of reaching the CAF Champions League group stage now looks bleak. They must overturn a four-goal deficit in Pretoria on October 26, a task that borders on the impossible.
