The Super Eagles of Nigeria will have just two FIFA international windows remaining in 2026 following a change to the international match calendar, with the first window now scheduled for September 21 to October 6.
The revised calendar means national teams will no longer have the earlier September window positioned around the third matchday of the English Premier League, with the first international break coming after Matchday 5 of the EPL.
According to the new schedule, the September/October window will run for 16 days and allow national teams to play up to four matches.
The second and final international window of the year will take place from November 9 to 17.
FIFA’s approved men’s International Match Calendar for 2026 provides for a 16-day late September/early October window with a maximum of four matches, followed by a nine-day November window for two matches.
Two windows instead of three
The adjustment means Nigeria will have only two opportunities during the remainder of 2026 to assemble the Super Eagles for FIFA-sanctioned international fixtures.
The first window, running from September 21 to October 6, provides a considerably longer period for national teams, while the November 9 to 17 window will be limited to nine days.
The September/October window is particularly significant because teams can schedule as many as four international matches during the 16-day period.
For the Super Eagles, the change could affect the timing of preparations, friendly matches and competitive fixtures as the team begins its post-World Cup 2026 programme.
EPL clubs to release players later
The new arrangement will also affect Nigerian players based in the English Premier League and other European leagues.
Rather than leaving their clubs after only a few league matches for the first international break, Super Eagles players in the EPL will now remain with their clubs through Matchday 5 before joining up with the national team.
The longer September/October window could, however, give the national team more time together once players report for international duty.
It also provides room for Nigeria to potentially play four matches during a single international window, depending on the fixtures arranged by the Nigeria Football Federation and the Super Eagles’ opponents.
FIFA’s new calendar
The change is part of FIFA’s men’s International Match Calendar for the 2025-2030 period.
FIFA had previously approved a nine-day, two-match window in March and another in June, while introducing a 16-day, four-match window in late September/early October from 2026. The November window remains a nine-day period for two matches.
The structure was designed following consultations with stakeholders, with FIFA citing player welfare, the quality of international matches and the need to create a more suitable global football calendar among the considerations.
The official FIFA calendar confirms that the late September/early October window was introduced from 2026, replacing the two separate September and October windows used in 2025.
What it means for Super Eagles
For Nigeria, the revised arrangement could provide coach and players with a more substantial period to work together.
The four-match capacity in the first window means the Super Eagles could potentially use the period for a combination of competitive matches and high-level friendlies, although the final fixtures will depend on the team’s schedule.
The November window will then provide another opportunity for the national team to play up to two matches before the end of the year.
The development comes as Nigeria looks to rebuild the Super Eagles following a disappointing 2026 World Cup qualification campaign and prepare for the next phase of international competition.
With only two international windows available under the revised 2026 calendar, the Nigeria Football Federation and the Super Eagles’ technical crew will have to maximise the opportunities to assess players, develop the squad and build towards upcoming major competitions.
The first window is scheduled for September 21 to October 6, while the final FIFA window of 2026 will run from November 9 to 17.
