The Tinubu administration uses security forces to break up a workers’ protest at the airport in Abuja

Sahara Reporters reported that the Nigerian government, headed by President Bola Tinubu, dispersed members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja using troops, police officers, and other security officials.

The NLC and TUC members had organized a protest at the Abuja airport to enforce their directive to aviation workers, urging them to halt all flights to Owerri, Imo. This protest was a response to the reported assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero by police personnel allegedly working for Governor Hope Uzodimma. Last week, Ajaero was reportedly beaten and blindfolded immediately after his arrest by security operatives. The NLC stated that his personal belongings, including phones, had not been returned.

During the protest, union members displayed banners expressing solidarity with oppressed Imo State workers, emphasizing the collective nature of their cause. A protester informed Sahara Reporters that various security forces, including the army, police, Department of State Services (DSS), and civil defense, were present at the airport to disperse them by force.
