Things Every Nigerian Is Supposed To Know Before A New President Is Sworn-In.

According to the Guardian Nigeria Newspaper, with a few hours left before the swearing-in of the next president of Nigeria (Bola Ahmed Tinubu) slated for Monday, May 29th 2023, below are six things every Nigerian is expected to know before the inauguration of a new president and the kickoff of a new administration.

1.) A president-elect becomes a president within 90 to 95 after he or she was elected the president of the country in a presidential election. The president-elect is also expected to declare his assets as well as liabilities and also take the oath of office in respect to the section 140(1) of the Nigerian constitution.

2.) In a case where the Vice President is sworn in as the president due to unforeseen circumstances, the section 136(1) and (2) of the Nigerian constitution permits the president to nominate someone as his or her vice, and the person would be approved by a simple majority of the National Assembly.

3.) In accordance with the section 140(2) of the Nigerian constitution, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), administers the oath of office to the president-elect in a public inauguration.

4.) In a situation where the president is unable to take the oath of office due to unforeseen circumstances, the Vice President is then sworn in and assumes the responsibility of the president in accordance with section 136(1) of the Nigerian constitution.

5.) The Nigerian constitution does not permit a president who is absent during the inauguration to be sworn-in.

6.) In the case of the death of the president and Vice President-elect before their inauguration, in accordance with section 136(2) of the Nigerian constitution, the National Assembly would issue a directive for the electoral umpire to conduct a fresh election.
