President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent Nigeria at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which will take place from October 21 to 26 in Apia, Samoa.

VP Shettima will join global leaders, including King Charles of England, to deliberate on the theme “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth.”

The discussions will centre on resilience, fostering digital connections, unlocking the potential of member nations, and empowering the Commonwealth’s youth for a sustainable future.

A key focus will also be the election of the next Commonwealth Secretary-General, with Africa set to produce the new leader.

Nigeria, as the largest African member, will play a pivotal role in the selection process, with candidates from Lesotho, Ghana, and The Gambia vying for the position.

Shettima is also expected to use this platform to attract investors to Nigeria through the Commonwealth Business Forum and participate in key discussions on the global economy, security, and environmental challenges.

Recall that President Tinubu did not attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly session in New York a few weeks ago.

VP Shettima delivered Nigeria’s national statement to the General Assembly, attended important sideline events, and held bilateral meetings.
