Tinubu Signs Landmark Police Bill, Grants Legal Authority To 48 Training Institutions Nationwide

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the Nigeria Police Training Institutions Establishment Bill, 2024, officially granting legal recognition to 48 police training institutions across the country.
The new law, sponsored by Senator Ahmed Abdulhamid Malam-Madori, aims to transform police education, enhance professionalism, and align Nigeria’s law enforcement standards with international best practices.
Under the Act, the training ecosystem is categorised into five groups: Police Colleges, Police Training Schools, Police Tactical Schools, Police Technical Training Schools, and other specialised institutions, strategically distributed across the six geopolitical zones.
Key institutions now backed by law include Police Colleges in Ikeja, Kaduna, Maiduguri, and Oji River; the Police Staff College in Jos; and the Police Detective College in Enugu. Several Police Training Schools in states such as Bauchi, Minna, Sokoto, Benin, and Calabar have also been legally established to strengthen grassroots training.
The Act further empowers Tactical Schools like the Mobile Training Schools in Gwoza, Ila-Orangun, and Ende-Hill; the Counter Terrorism and Special Protection Unit schools; as well as the K9, Mounted Troop, Marine, and Pre-Retirement Training Schools.
It also recognises Technical and Specialised Institutions such as the Police School of Intelligence in Kwara, the Police Institute of Digital Studies in Abeokuta, and the National Institute of Police Studies in Abuja.
Senator Malam-Madori hailed the presidential assent as a “transformative moment” for internal security, saying the law will professionalise training, expand research, and modernise the nation’s policing system.
Security analysts have praised the move, describing it as one of the most comprehensive reforms in Nigeria’s policing history.
