The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate has announced that free caesarean sections (C-sections) will be available for Nigerian women in need.

The announcement was made Thursday during the launch of the “Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative” (MAMII) at the Nigeria Health Sector-Wide Joint Annual Review in Abuja.

“No woman should lose her life simply because she can’t afford a C-section,” the minister said.

The initiative, supported by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), will ensure that eligible women can access free C-sections at both public and empanelled private facilities.

Through MAMII, resources will focus on high-burden areas across 172 local government areas contributing to over 50% of maternal deaths in Nigeria.

The minister said NHIA in partnership with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and state health insurance agencies, will oversee reimbursements to providers.

Prof. Pate added: “In these areas, community health workers act as vital links, bringing lifesaving information and support to doorsteps.”

He said the initiative also aims to bolster emergency care through a revitalized National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System, enhancing transport for urgent maternal and newborn care.

Pate expressed gratitude to development partners, stating, “Their commitment exemplifies a shared dedication to health equity and the well-being of every Nigerian.”

He called on state leaders, healthcare providers, and community members to support this crucial effort.
