Mixed Feelings As Power Shifts To Tinubu

All is set for President Muhammadu Buhari to hand over the mantle of leadership to the 16th democratically elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, tomorrow, Monday.

Tinubu, in a keenly contested poll, defeated his opponents, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar and his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi to emerge winner of the February 25 election.

Although the outcome of the poll was vehemently rejected by the opposition parties, the former Lagos Governor is set to be sworn-in as the President of the country.

Kudus Becomes Lagos RTEAN Chair As court Kicks MC Oluomo Out

The Lagos branch of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria has named Aransiola Kudus as the acting Chairman following a court ruling.

Earlier, the Lagos state government had suspended RTEAN activities in the state, dissolved its elected leadership, and established a 25-member park management committee led by Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, also known as MC Oluomo, to manage all motor parks and garages in the state. However, the National Industrial Court of Nigeria nullified the government’s decision and affirmed RTEAN’s right to operate in Lagos State in a ruling delivered on April 18th.

Following this court’s ruling, the Executive National President of RTEAN, Dr. Musa Muhammed Maitakobi, appointed Aransiola Kudus, the Deputy Chairman (Admin), as the acting Chairman of Lagos in accordance with Article 7:2ii(a) of RTEAN’s constitution during the trade union’s National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja.

Akpabio, Yari, Izunaso contest Senate presidency

There are indications that the battle for the senate presidency for the 10th National Assembly has been reduced to a three-horse race, involving former Governor Godswill Akpabio, Senator Abdulaziz Yari and Senator Osita Izunaso, Sunday PUNCH has learnt.

Impeccable sources at the National Assembly told our correspondent that this development has led to three power blocs, headed by Akpabio, Yari and Izunaso, dividing the senators-elect along these lines.

Since the All Progressives Congress made its zoning in a consensus list known, some members have disagreed with the arrangement.

A chieftain of the party, Olujonwo Obasanjo, had said the party remained supreme and as such all aggrieved members should align with the party’s decision.

Others have made a case for their region, especially the North-Central, which has become very vocal about its position since the zoning list came out.

Court sacks IG Alkali-Baba over illegal stay in office

A Federal High Court sitting in Awka, Anambra State, has declared that the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, is not entitled to the current seat he is occupying.

The pronouncement was made by Justice Fatun Riman who stated that Baba’s stay in office is against the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.

Riman said the Police IG’s stay is “unlawful and unconstitutional,” insisting that Alkali-Baba is an illegal occupier of the IGP’s office.

The court ruled in its judgment in a suit marked FHC/AKW/CS/58/2023, filed by Okechukwu Nwafor, a taxpayer.

According to the judgment, the court held that only an officer within the listed rank, with four years in service, can be appointed as IG of Police, not one with less than four years.
