Tragedy in Oshodi as Fully Loaded Truck Crashes Off Bridge

Fully Loaded Truck Plunges Off Oshodi Bridge, Causes Traffic Gridlock

A major accident was averted on Saturday after a fully loaded six-tyre truck plunged off the Oshodi Bridge in Lagos, leaving one man severely injured.

The truck, with registration number AKD 135 YK, was transporting toner printing materials when it reportedly lost its brakes while descending the Oshodi-Oke Bridge, crashing into a ditch below the terminal on its way toward Mile 2.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) arrived swiftly at the scene, rescued the injured victim, and cleared the wreckage to ease traffic congestion in the area. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

Confirming the incident, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, said the quick intervention of the agency’s operatives prevented what could have been a major tragedy.

He added that the driver of the truck was arrested and handed over to officers from Makinde Police Station, Oshodi, for further investigation, while the accident scene was cordoned off to avert additional mishaps.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Bakare Oki, commended the officers for their swift response, describing their action as a demonstration of the agency’s dedication to public safety and emergency management.

Oki appealed to motorists—especially heavy-duty truck drivers—to carry out proper vehicle maintenance and comply with safety regulations, noting that accidents tend to increase during the ember months.

He also disclosed that LASTMA had intensified its round-the-clock traffic operations across Lagos, deploying emergency units and recovery trucks at key locations to ensure rapid response to road incidents.

“Our officers remain on high alert to protect lives and property, and to keep Lagos roads safe before, during, and after the festive season,” Oki assured.
