True Story Of How Aki And Paw Paw Met

Screen twins Osita Iheme, popularly known as Pawpaw, and Chinedu Ikedieze, famously referred to as Aki, who gained prominence in the Nigerian film industry following their roles in the debut movie “Aki na Ukwa,” are personalities known both by the young and old.

The duo expressed solemnity as they reflected on the genesis of the ‘Aki and Pawpaw’ phenomenon during a candlelight/tribute event honoring the late filmmaker Chukwuka Emelionwu, also known as Kasvid.

Prior to their physical meeting, during an interview with host Chude Jideonwo, Chinedu Ikedieze, recounted the serendipitous beginning of his enduring friendship with his close friend and fellow actor, Osita Iheme, famously known as Aki.

Ikedieze’s recollections transported him back to his earlier days when he lived with his uncle in Aba, where fate orchestrated the initial encounter between the two remarkable talents.

While frequenting the local market, Ikedieze was puzzled by a recurring scenario where a tailor claimed to have kept some clothes for him, despite him never requesting for it, with Osita experiencing the same thing.

This confusion sparked rumors among his peers about a lookalike, leading to whispers of a mysterious doppelgänger bearing a striking resemblance to Ikedieze.

The mystery persisted until the day Ikedieze finally laid eyes on Osita Iheme in person through Kasvid, a moment that ignited an immediate connection between the two, transcending mere coincidence.

Kasvid, a renowned filmmaker and marketer known for producing hit movies such as “Mr. Ibu in London,” “The Last Burial,” and “August Meeting,” tragically passed away in a fatal accident while en route to his hometown in Anambra State.

The candlelight/tribute night, organized by Nollywood stakeholders under the leadership of Sir Emma Isikaku, provided an opportunity for movie stars, producers, marketers, and industry friends to pay heartfelt tributes to Kasvid.

Described by many as a respectful individual with a golden heart who contributed significantly to the industry, Kasvid was also recognized for his role in nurturing talent.

However, it was the tributes from Aki and Pawpaw that particularly moved attendees to tears.

The duo, renowned for their stature and comedic talents, publicly acknowledged Kasvid’s pivotal role in shaping their acting careers.

Pawpaw reminisced about his initial encounter with Kasvid in 2002, highlighting how the filmmaker spotted him during a film shoot in Enugu and immediately recognized his potential.

Kasvid’s belief in Pawpaw led to the creation of the iconic ‘Aki and Pawpaw’ brand, as he proposed the idea of pairing Pawpaw with Chinedu Ikedieze, who had previously featured in one of Kasvid’s productions.

This collaboration birthed the movie “Aki na Ukwa,” which propelled both actors to stardom.

Similarly, Aki recounted meeting Kasvid during his undergraduate days at the Institute of Management Technology (IMT) in Enugu.

Kasvid, impressed by Aki’s demeanor, took a keen interest in him and eventually visited him on campus, laying the groundwork for their professional partnership.

Aki acknowledged Kasvid’s willingness to invest in their talent, emphasizing the risks the filmmaker took to elevate their careers.

Kasvid’s legacy as a visionary filmmaker and talent developer left an indelible mark on Nollywood, shaping the careers of iconic actors and enriching the Nigerian film landscape.

Further Illuminating the journey of their camaraderie, Ikedieze described their encounter as an eruption of instant chemistry, setting the stage for their enduring friendship.

Their professional collaboration, Ikedieze revealed, was marked by a remarkable synergy that translated seamlessly onto the screen.

Their performances reflected a symbiotic bond forged through years of collaboration, with their on-screen chemistry becoming a testament to their friendship.

A noteworthy aspect of their partnership was their ability to cover for each other’s missed script lines effortlessly, showcasing their on-the-fly synchronization and shared creative vision.

When one stumbled over a line, the other seamlessly adapted, ensuring the scene continued without interruption, a skill that became their trademark.

Such spontaneous improvisation became synonymous with their work, occasionally requiring a discerning script reader to distinguish between their ingenious ad-libs and the original dialogue.
