U.S. President signs law to ban TikTok

The U.S. President, Joe Biden, has signed a bill that would force TikTok to cease operations in the country if its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, fails to sell it within a year.

In separate reports, BytesDance has been given a nine-month ultimatum to sell the video-streaming app and it will become illegal for App Stores to share the video-streaming app in the U.S after the stipulated time.

According to NPR, the law is the most serious threat yet to the app’s future in the U.S., intensifying America’s tech war with China.

It was explained that, regardless of this law, “it is not expected to cause any immediate disruption to TikTok, as a forthcoming legal challenge, and various hurdles to selling the app, will most likely cause months of delay.”

However, the law, included in a bill providing foreign aid to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan, directed ByteDance to sell its ownership in TikTok within 12 months, or shut down.
