Amid claims of the United States (US) dominance over Venezuela after a dramatic military operation, Acting President Delcy Rodríguez has forcefully rejected assertions that her country has been ‘subjugated’ by foreign power.
Standing at a sombre ceremony on Thursday, January 8, honouring the 100 Venezuelans her government says were killed during the January 3 US assault, Rodríguez insisted that Venezuela remains sovereign and in charge of its own destiny.
“We are not subordinate or subjugated,” Rodríguez declared, countering claims by US leaders that Washington now effectively controls the country following the ouster of former president Nicolás Maduro.
“Nobody surrendered. There was fighting for the homeland,” she added, emphasising Venezuelan resistance to the assault.
Naija News reports that Rodriguez’s comment comes amid international scrutiny after a US military operation captured Maduro and flew him to New York to face drug‑trafficking charges, drawing both support and condemnation worldwide.
In Washington, President Trump has openly suggested that the US will play a direct role in overseeing Venezuela’s transition and exploiting its vast oil resources for reconstruction and energy deals, comments that Caracas has seized on.
According to reports, Trump said the US might manage Venezuelan oil production and related economic activity for years as part of post‑intervention planning.
Rodríguez’s remarks were clearly aimed at countering this narrative, stressing that no external power runs Venezuela’s government and reinforcing Caracas’s claim to national sovereignty despite ongoing US involvement.

Venezuela’s interim government has attributed the reported 100 deaths to the US assault, a figure that includes both Venezuelan military personnel and other casualties, underscoring the human cost of the conflict.
